Friends, now’s the time to be a hero and adopt the rescue dog of your hopes and dreams, because this weekend the RSPCA is reducing adoption fees to the cheap-as-free price of $29.

It’s part of their annual Clear The Shelters pet drive, which is happening across shelters from Friday Feb 23rd to Sunday Feb 25th, in all states in Australia except Western Australia and Tasmania. Last year they managed to adopt out hundreds of animals across the country.

It’s not just good doggos, there’s also cats, ponies (!!) rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks and various farmyard animals up for adoption. At prices like that, you could fill your house up with a menagerie of beautiful creatures, and live the kind of blissful life known only by Noah and his boat full of pets.

The $29 adoption fee covers microchipping, desexing, vaccinations, vet checks, and up-to-date worming, which is most of the big costs that hit new pet owners. Adoption fees are often around $600, depending on breed, size and kind of animals (so like, a big horse or dog is more expensive than a duck, in my experience — the economy!).

Not only is this a cost-effective time to take the plunge and get a great hound to make your life infinitely better, you’re also doing an ethically brilliant thing and finding a home for an animal in need. If that isn’t enough, imagine how great saying ‘she’s a rescue’ will be at the dog park.
