Chloe Grace Moretz’s New Tearjerker Looks Promising
Dying kids, Sonic Youth references... This could be fun.
You don’t love Chloe Grace Moretz? Get out of my house. Chloe Grace Moretz is a lovable superstar. Her last film — Kimberly Peirce’s ill-conceived remake of DePalma’s already flawless Carrie — might’ve led her astray, but she’s back with a new drama that’ll swell your hearts and jab at your tear-ducts.
If I Stay, based on the bestselling 2009 novel by Gayle Forman, tells the story of 17-year-old Mia Hall, a cello enthusiast, teen romantic and Juilliard prospect, whose life is thrown into coma-chaos following a fatal family car crash. “Isn’t it amazing how life is one thing, and then in an instant it becomes something else? Here I am, Mia, the girl who thinks about the cello and Adam, and just like that…” begins the trailer, before a whole bunch of horribly sad stuff happens.
The whole thing may come across like a sappy, low-rent The Fault In Our Stars, but you say that like it’s a bad thing? All I know is that Chloe Grace Moretz probably learned how to play the cello for real for this thing, because that’s how great Chloe Grace Moretz is. Also, these things:
1. Hip Sonic Youth Goo t-shirt
2. Semi-ironic ‘I Heart Yo Yo Ma’ locker sticker
3. This bit, which is like Ghost for a new generation
4. Chloe Grace Moretz dressed like Debbie Harry or Jem from The Holograms
All the ingredients for a fun night out, I think. If I Stay opens in cinemas locally on August 28.
