This weekend we all got a glimpse at a pure and uncomplicated joy we’ve likely never quite experienced. A Texas woman named Candace Payne bought herself a Chewbacca mask from a local department store, ran excitedly out to her car, and the rest is history. The resultant video of her literally weeping with laughter has been watched more than 131 million times making it three times more popular than the most viewed Facebook Live video to date and it even scored praise from the original Chewbacca, Peter Mayhew.
Candace seems (predictably) happy about this. In a Facebook post put up the day after the video, she said she was “OVERWHELMED with gratitude”. “Never imagined finding my ‘simple joy’ would land me more VIEWS on a little FB video than Mark Zuckerberg has followers. INSANE.” She then urged everyone to find their own “simple joy” and “keep belly laughing again and again”.
Now Kohl’s, the department store where she picked up her mask, have rewarded her for this supreme service to the human race (and all the priceless free marketing) with a delivery of freebie Star Wars goods. She doesn’t have to share the Chewbacca masks with her kids anymore <3
