Hollywood has run out of ideas, so today it was announced that there will be a remake of Ron Howard’s 1984 film Splash. For those too young to remember (or those who generally steer clear of mermaid movies) Splash is a touching story about a beautiful mermaid played by Daryl Hannah, who falls in love with a land-locked Tom Hanks. John Candy plays his brother, because ’80s. It’s very weird and excellent.
Given gender-switching classic movies has been proven to be a success, the new Splash will apparently be giving the Daryl Hannah role to Channing Tatum, a choice that instantly makes the story a little more interesting. It will be Channing Tatum sensually bathing, while flipping his tail! Channing Tatum who is thrilled and curious about mundane things! Channing Tatum who plays a dippy, beautiful love interest!
In terms of power dynamics, the choice to cast a dude in the role (a dude who willingly upset the male gaze in the past) is intriguing. Cannot wait until dumb dudes on the internet decide that their childhoods have been ruined!
