Cate Blanchett Is A Big Ol’ Flirt In The First Teaser Trailer For ‘Carol’
New York. Glamour. Forbidden romance. Oh god, it's too much.
Sometimes teaser trailers include a few of the film’s most intriguing snippets of dialogue. Sometimes they’re jam-packed full of tightly cut action sequences. Other times, they’re a full minute of literal teasing as Cate Blanchett near wordlessly seduces Rooney Mara with furtive glances and charming smiles set against a wintry 1950s New York and a woman crooning ‘My Foolish Heart’.
Oh god.
Carol which premiered to rave reviews at Cannes earlier this year — seriously, four of the ten reviews on Metacritic have given it five stars — tells the story of an affair between a married older woman and a young shop assistant. An ultimate tale of forbidden love due to the fact homosexuality was still illegal at the time, it’s based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel The Price of Salt — a book which was even written under a pseudonym due to the story’s content.
With two Academy Award winners in the lead roles, the film looks absolutely set to do it justice, and when speaking about it at Cannes, director Todd Haynes showed great compassion for the source material.
“I’m often interested in stories about women because their lives are often more burdened by society — the choices that they make, carrying on the institutions of the family, satisfying men, raising children,” he told The Wall Street Journal. “I find that those films invariably speak about the culture that we all live in.”
