British Muslims Are Calling Out ISIS On Social Media
"Because my religion promotes tolerance for women, and you have no respect for women."
One of the hideous by-products of the rise of the ISIS is how, like al-Qaeda before them, they’ve hijacked Islam to lend legitimacy to their own demented agendas, and slandered the faith of more than one and a half billion people along the way. In between the horrifying actions of a few militants and the race-baiting headlines of tabloid press, the voices of everyday Muslims are all too easily drowned out.
Which is why, according to the ABC, a small but growing number of Muslims in the UK are taking to social media to reclaim what Islam really means. The brainchild of London’s Active Change Foundation, the #notinmyname campaign is only about a week old but has already gathered a huge amount of attention online.
Young Muslims have especially taken to Twitter to reinforce the message that the “Islamic” State does not act in accordance with Islamic teachings or in the name of Muslims everywhere.
Young Muslims launched a campaign to remind the world that ISIS doesn’t speak for them.Very powerful. #NotInMyName pic.twitter.com/yMczEeuV5u

Another disgusting threat from the un-Islamic State #NotInMyName. We all call for Alan Henning’s prompt release. pic.twitter.com/3H2Rq1ntwE

Closer to home, Love For 100 Years is a fantastic campaign set up in response to terrible headlines everywhere so people in the wider community can express their support for Islam and Muslims in Australia. These are very nice things people are doing. Hopefully a local newspaper will write about them sooner or later.
