Bill Murray’s Christmas Special Is Coming To Netflix And It Looks Wonderfully Surly
Your favourite drunk uncle wants to wish you "A Very Murray Christmas".
In October last year Bill Murray told Variety he was working on a Christmas variety show with Sofia Coppola, and everyone was equal parts excited and confused. On one hand: Bill Murray is the entertainment industry’s equivalent of your jolly drunk uncle and anything that includes him singing is a surefire success. On the other: it’s hard to imagine how Coppola’s proclivity for filming slow-motion existential crises could transfer to the ridiculous cheese-fest that is Christmas TV.
Today, the first teaser trailer has been released — a ridiculous SEVEN MONTHS before Christmas — and we can now see there’s nothing that traditional about it at all. The special which will air in December will be presented on Netflix, and it is literally Lost In Translation but dressed as reindeer.
In what’s been described as “an homage to the classic variety show”, Murray will play himself in a short feature where he hosts famous guests during a snowstorm in New York City. The guests announced so far include George Clooney, Amy Poehler, Michael Cera, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Jason Schwartzman, Rashida Jones, Miley Cyrus and Phoenix (duh, it wouldn’t be a Sofia Coppola production without them).
It’s only a matter of time until Scarlett Johansson is added to that lineup as well because honestly, if you’re going to use what appears to be the exact same set, you kinda owe it to everyone to reunite these two.

If that ridiculously short teaser was disappointing, here’s a gratuitous video of Bill Murray drunkenly falling off his chair on live television earlier this week:
Fingers crossed the special is just an artfully-styled hour of him sculling eggnog, stumbling around like this, and screaming ‘Jingle Bells’ with Miley Cyrus.
