They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder – and these mutts are certainly something to behold. Held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest is about celebrating nature’s little imperfections, and paying tribute to that special bond between a pet and its owner that truly transcends physical appearance.

This year’s top dog? A blind, hairless Chihuahua named Sweepee Rambo.

A favourite with the crowd, Sweepee is a 17-year-old Chinese crested Chihuahua with “baby-soft freckled skin and legendary blond Mohawk”. Her owner Jason Wurtz will use the $1500 prize money to help remove a tumour on her gum. “Scoring was tough with so many uniquely qualified dogs,” said chief judge Brian Sobel. “But we’re confident that Sweepee will be a magnificent champion!”

Seventeen pooches competed for the title, in the annual competition that dates back more than 50 years. Among the also-rans: a Dachshund/Chinese Crested cross that looks suspiciously like Donald Trump.

It’d be interesting to find out what his immigration policies are. Surely they can’t be any worse than those of his human counterpart?

In a related story, my first-born child will absolutely be named Sweepee Rambo.
