Earlier this month, Canadian pop star and sk8er boi enthusiast Avril Lavigne announced she was about to release her comeback single, titled ‘Head Above Water’. She’s now come through on her promise, and guess what? The track fucking slaps.

The thundering power ballad is the first look at her upcoming album, which was largely written during, and about, Lavigne’s battle with Lyme disease.

“Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles,” she wrote in a statement earlier this month. “I was able to turn that fight into music I’m really proud of. I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly.”

“I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die,” Lavigne said about ‘Head Above Water’.

“My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”

No release date has been set for the new album — which will be Lavigne’s sixth — but apparently its in the pipeline. It’ll be her first release since her self-titled record in 2013 — which drew criticism over it’s lead single (‘Hello Kitty’) and it’s grating cultural appropriation.
