Love that once hung on the wall used to mean something, you know. But now it means nothing. The echoes are gone in the hall, but I still remember the pain. Oh, there isn’t one thing left you could say. I’m sorry it’s too late. You have to let it go.

Those are both the lyrics to Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger’s sole collaboration together, ‘Let It Go’, and an accurate (and appropriately angsty) description of what’s happening in their relationship. After two years of marriage, my teenage pop idol Avril Lavigne and Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger are calling it quits.

In order to fully get in touch with the enormity of this moment, please take a second to watch their music video in which Avril fist-pumps her way around a mansion and Chad morphs into a confused elderly man. This pain is too real.

Avril shared this news a few hours ago on Instagram with a picture of the couple on their wedding day and an accompanying message.

“It is with heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today,” she said. “Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we’ve created many unforgettable moments. We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other. To all our family, friends and fans, thank you sincerely for the support.”

But, despite the sincerity and sadness of that message, very few people seem to be taking it seriously. While some fans have offered condolences to Avril directly, most of the discussion around it seems to revolve around these three jokes:

Geddit? Geddit? Yeah, you get it.

While that’s bound to get old real quick, if you feel you must express your grief via a pun or snarky tweet today, please make it this one:

RIP Chavril. Ten points to the legend who inevitably edits a photo of them into this video:
