Australia Is Pretty Much The Shittiest House On ‘The Block’ In This Hilarious New Webseries

From the people who brought you 'The Minister For Men'.

A major reason many of us enjoy watching terrible reality TV to laugh at other people’s misfortune. I took a weird amount of pleasure from the fact Ash and Camilla’s stupid truffle-infused gnocchi was all fucked up on My Kitchen Rules last night. I’ve never even watched a renovation show, but I already want the couple that’s been marketed as Barbie and Ken on House Rules to smash a sledgehammer through a support beam and ruin their dream house in the first episode.

I’m not proud of it; it’s just the way it is.

Now, the same people who transformed Gretel Killeen into the beloved Minister For Men have created a new webseries that turns this hideous schadenfreude back on all of us. In an imagined series where ambitious couples renovate entire nations, this New Zealand duo are stuck with the dud.

With entrenched racism, an enormous reliance on the mining industry, environmental problems and the wrong kind of glass ceiling, we’re a real fixer-upper. Even worse than that, it seems like people are now laughing at us.

This clip comes as part of a larger strategy from Ideas At The House to get people talking about #IdeasforAus. After hosting a number of high-profile feminists for All About Women last month, as well as a surprisingly sassy Stephen Hawking via hologram earlier this week, the Opera House are turning their sights on the nation at large with a new discussion series. Taking place this Sunday May 3 from 10am, Carnegie Conversations will see some of our brightest minds — including Julian Burnside, Peter Singer, Tony Windsor, Marcia Langton and Benjamin Law — come together to debate “ideas for a better Australia”.

You should probably get amongst it. We’re getting our arse handed to us by a country whose Prime Minister pulls women’s hair for lols.
