ABC political editor Chris Uhlmann has absolutely savaged Donald Trump, declaring that the US president has “no desire and no capacity to lead the world.”

Uhlmann appeared on Insiders on Sunday morning to assess Trump’s performance at the G20 conference in Berlin. After describing the US as “isolated and friendless” on the issue of climate change, Uhlmann said that the president struck an “uneasy, lonely, awkward figure” at the gathering, adding that “you got the strong sense that some of the leaders are trying to find the best ways to work around him.”

“There’s a tendency among some hopeful souls to confuse the speeches written for Trump with the thoughts of the man himself,” said Uhlmann. “But it’s the unscripted Trump that’s real. A man who barks out bile in 140 characters, who wastes his precious days as president at war with the West’s institutions like the judiciary, independent government agencies, and the free press.”

“Donald Trump’s a man who craves power because it burnishes his celebrity. To be constantly talking and talked about is all that matters, and there is no value placed on the meaning of words.”

Uhlmann concluded by saying that Trump “has pressed fast forward on the decline of the United States. He managed to isolate his nation, to confuse and alienate his allies, and to diminish America.”

As mic drops go, it wasn’t bad.

The clip has since been picked up on by social media users in the United States, and has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times. Let’s just hope Trump doesn’t catch wind of it – after Turnbull’s impersonation of him, you kind of get the feeling that we’re skating on thin ice.
