A US Soccer Player Hugged Her Wife After Winning The Women’s World Cup And It Was Bloody Lovely
The USA is having a pretty good few weeks.
The US national team has easily clinched the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup this morning, running away with a thumping 5-2 victory against Japan defined by an incredible four goals to the Americans in the opening twenty minutes, including a hat-trick to midfielder Carli Lloyd that featured this effort:
But arguably the tournament’s most memorable moment came after full time, when veteran forward Abby Wambach celebrated the long-awaited victory with her wife Sarah Huffman, who was sitting in the front row:
A stalwart of the American side for the last fourteen years, Wambach has scored more goals than any international soccer player of any gender and was made honorary captain before the game started. It was both 35-year-old Wambach’s first World Cup championship and her final World Cup appearance.
Wambach and Huffman married in Hawaii in 2013; as of last month, their marriage is recognised in all 50 US states.
