In news that will come as a surprise to basically no one, an elite Melbourne boy’s school is the subject of controversy today, after footage emerged of students making derogatory statements about women.

In a video originally posted to a closed Facebook page, Year 12 students at Melbourne Grammar School are interviewed by their classmates and asked to rank the attractiveness of their formal dates out of 10. As many as 50 boys were also filmed participating in a ‘Tinder boot camp’ on the school oval.

“This is Grammar, boys,” one student can reportedly be heard shouting. “That means nothing, and I mean nothing, under a seven.”

Another student is asked whether his date is the same girl two other students previously “went through,” to which he responds “third time lucky.”

The video was first reported to The Herald Sun by the parents of one of the girls being discussed. It comes just a few short weeks after a pair of Brighton Grammar School boys were expelled for creating an Instagram account of ‘young sluts,’ featuring images of girls as young as 11. The Brighton case sparked public outrage, and led to renewed calls for better school education about rape culture and consent.

Melbourne Grammar School Head Roy Kelley described the footage as “unacceptable,” saying that it was “totally inconsistent with the values and standards of this School, its students and our community.”

“Melbourne Grammar School takes very seriously its responsibility to instill positive values in all our students, particularly in relation to the respect of others,” he added.

Whether the school takes any action against the students – or seeks to address the culture that tacitly encourages this kind of behaviour in the first place – remains to be seen.
